NASB accommodates 2317 Navy operatives along with 61 civilians that are employed on property. George Womack is the commanding US Navy captain. After the suggested closure in May of this year, the Navy installation acquired the name Brunswick Landing. The futuristic hope was to convert the Navy air station into an airport for civilians or an energy park. Brunswick is a great area for military life, because the area is very convenient and it maintains its rural atmosphere. If you are thrilled to enjoy a beautiful outdoor environment, you will surely feel accomplished if you are stationed at NASB.

The base governs 2 squadrons and 5 active airfield duty assignments in the northeastern division. Every six months patrols are deployed overseas to execute assigned duties by operating the P-3 Orion aircraft fleet. The navy station commands 29 tenants inclusive of the Reserve C-130 Hercules operators and the Reserve P-3 operators. Additionally, approximately sixteen hundred Navy Reservists travel all over New England to train at NAR Brunswick along with other reserve command variants.

Over twenty percent of the activities, services and facilities located at NASB acquire the AEGIS-class destroyer ship development program support at the Bath, BIW Corporation and SOS (Supervisor of Shipbuilding). Brunswick also accommodates the only school for cold weather SERE; which is nestled on twelve thousand acres at close proximity to Rangeley located in NW Maine.

Naval Station Mayport

Naval Station Mayport or NS Mayport is another military base of Florida, situated around seven miles east of a populated city, Jacksonville, at the entrance of the St Johns River. Area where it is located is known as Duval County. Naval Station Mayport is considered to be a major US Navy Base. It boasts of possessing the paved airfield which is named as Admiral David. This medium sized runway measures around 8001 x 200 ft. At the present, Captain Aaron L. Bowman has been given the responsibility of commanding this station.

Naval Station was the commissioned in December 1942 and since then, it has shown a remarkable development by expanding itself quite a lot; about becoming the 3rd largest area in United States, and by earning a good deal of reputation within a short span of time.

Having a busy harbor competent of accommodating 34 to 35 ships and an 8000 foot (2400 m) runway efficiently able to host almost any aircraft in Defense inventory has made Naval Station Mayport’s operational system distinctive from others. The airfield has been able to manage 135,000 sorties at annual basis. The Station was a home to United States 4th Feel until 1950’s, when it was deactivated. But recently somewhere in 2008, it was reactivated.

Originally, it has served as homeport to a number of powered aircraft carriers which belonged to the Atlantic Fleet. Some of those were named as USS Franklin D, the USS Forrestal and many others. The latest one being USS John. F. Kennedy (CV-67). After all of these conventionally-powered aircrafts were decommissioned by the Navy, Mayport has not been given the duty of any carriers currently.

The Congress has passed legislation which allots a sum of US $75 million to Mayport for the dredging and upgrades to house a nuclear power aircraft carrier though. Review Report by Quadrennial Defense in 29th January 2010 made it clear that a nuclear carrier would be home ported at NAS Mayport. They claimed that this decision would be a wise aid in protecting fleet against the potential attack by terrorists, accident or maybe just a natural disaster. The report claims that this is because at the moment all the east coast aircrafts carriers are based at NS Norfolk and west coast aircrafts carriers are divided between NS Naval Base Kitsap and Station San Diego in the state of Washington.

Secretary of Defense, Robert Grates showered light on the thought that since the nuclear carrier home port was not accepted on west coast then the east coast should also not compromise by considering it as acceptable. Elected officials of Virginia strongly disagreed with this and opposed this decision as they feared to lose 3500 sailors, together with huge revenue of estimated $425 million they receive every year. A high number of workers would become unemployed and apart from these, there are other severe losses of money etc which they would have to suffer.

NS Mayport has accommodated 14,000 active-duty personnel with 45,000 family members and 1400 civilian personnel.
